I've been just a tiny bit tied up with getting Keep No Secrets ready for release (yes, that's understatement you're detecting! LOL!) and I'll talk about that, too. Interestingly enough, it's not preparing the manuscript for e-book formats that is so time-consuming, but getting it ready for print. But I'm loving the control! You're kind to say that, ...Margaret, thank you! You're kind to say that, but I can assure you that I've been following others who've carved the path before I even started thinking about it. Christine Kling is one who has been incredibly open and honest about her career path, and I've learned a lot from reading her posts at the Write on the Water blog she writes with several other authors. www.writeonthewater.com. She was an under-appreciated writer here in Florida who has worked her tail off and is finally seeing the results, I'm happy to say. (She's led a very interesting life, too!) Another one who has shared her experiences openly with me is my friend and fellow author Sharon Potts, who is doing the "hybrid" way I talk about briefly above - she's published her thrillers the traditional way, and self-published her chick-lit online. That's what is so cool about the business now -- authors have so many more options.Julie Comptonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11518352063650354325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10372032.post-6936142921452284142013-01-17T18:31:18.669-05:002013-01-17T18:31:18.669-05:00Julie, as always, you are the person up front with...Julie, as always, you are the person up front with the machete, clearing a path through the jungle for the rest of us. My Hub and I go to all the Tampa DMB shows, except for 2010—because July 30th was our Bday so we saw him in WPB instead. So the date and the pic of you with the man—awesome. I can't believe he signed your book. Swoon. Going to check out your books now. ...Your post didn't get put in spam, Terri! Yay!
Two is what I found to be the average for the biggies, like BN. Of course, indie bookstores (love them!) will often keep copies of your book forever, but you still have to hope someone finds it.
I'll never forget how, only about 9 weeks after my TNL release, I walked into a BN (by my house) with my daughter for one of the Twilight midnight releases. I couldn't believe how many people were there, and I thought, great! All the parents there with their kids will be browsing the shelves. But when I went to search for my book, I couldn't find it. When I asked at the counter, I was told it had sold out, but they didn't reorder, because I wasn't on the "list" of authors whose books get automatically reordered when they all sell. I love my local BN - they've been great to me - but this was a "headquarters" type issue. The clerk was wonderful and she put in an order for more, but of course, it was too late to reap any of the benefit from having so many people in the store that night.Julie Comptonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11518352063650354325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10372032.post-38348697891341735082013-01-17T10:07:43.875-05:002013-01-17T10:07:43.875-05:00Two months? I think if I were only a reader (and not a writer, also), I wouldn’t hold back so much with my reviews. But I just can’t bring myself to give low reviews to my fellow authors, because although many authors would be reasonable about them, I think many might not be, and it’s not worth it to me to burn those bridges.

Nancy, thanks so much for the post! If someone gives my book one star, I WANT them to list the reason why.

It may be for a ridiculous reason, which would make another customer discount the one-starred review (e.g., The shipping box containing the cancer treatment that saved my life was damaged during shipping and since I prefer smooth boxes, I can only give one star to this product.) We’ve all seen those acts of idiocy on Amazon.

A reader may have a valid gripe about my book, and that's something I can learn from.

I do agree that there's never a good reason to trash the author. You can say you didn’t love something without making it a personal attack.

With all that said, I most likely would not give an author one star. I appreciate brutal honesty. Many don't. If I didn't like a book, I just wouldn’t do a review.Margaret Reyes Dempseyhttp://www.margaretreyesdempsey.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10372032.post-54064650813603521722012-12-20T18:23:11.947-05:002012-12-20T18:23:11.947-05:00Hello all you wonderful peeps up above in the comm...Hello all you wonderful peeps up above in the comment chain!
